Visceral Fat Estimator
Estimates your visceral fat level (1–10) using waist circumference, height, age, and sex. Visceral fat surrounds internal organs and carries higher metabolic risk than subcutaneous fat.
This is a heuristic estimate based on waist-to-height ratio adjusted for age and sex — not a clinical measurement. CT or MRI is the gold standard for measuring visceral fat.
Frequently asked questions
What is visceral fat and why does it matter?
Visceral fat is adipose tissue stored around the internal organs — liver, pancreas, intestines — in the abdominal cavity. Unlike subcutaneous fat (under the skin), it is metabolically active and secretes inflammatory compounds linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. High visceral fat raises these risks independently of total body weight or BMI.
How is this visceral fat level calculated?
The estimator uses your waist-to-height ratio as the primary driver — a validated proxy for central adiposity — then adjusts for age (visceral fat increases with age, especially after 40) and sex (men accumulate more visceral fat at the same waist-to-height ratio than premenopausal women). The result is a heuristic indicator on a 1–10 scale, not a clinical measurement. CT or MRI is the gold standard.
How does this differ from the Waist-to-Height Ratio calculator?
The WHtR calculator gives a raw ratio and a simple cardiovascular risk category without accounting for age or sex. The Visceral Fat Estimator incorporates both: a 50-year-old man at WHtR 0.52 carries meaningfully more visceral fat than a 25-year-old woman at the same ratio, and the estimator reflects that difference in its output.
How can I reduce visceral fat?
Visceral fat responds well to aerobic exercise — 150–300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity (brisk walking, cycling, swimming) produces measurable reductions in 8–12 weeks. Reducing refined carbohydrates and added sugars accelerates the effect. Visceral fat is typically lost before subcutaneous fat, so waist measurements often improve before scale weight changes noticeably.
